The list of reasons we're going hard at Big Tobacco is too long to post here, but here are a few good ones you can share with your friends. Enjoy... The Quotes — Some of Big Tobacco's Greatest Hits
- "Realistically, if our Company is to survive and prosper, over the long term, we must get our share of the youth market. In my opinion, this will require new brands tailored to the youth market."
- "If it was legal to sell to 'em [children], we'd be glad to. But it's not."
- "About 90% of legislation at the state level [adversely] affecting our industry will not be enacted... [Why?] Because we're good. That may sound arrogant, but I don't know any other way to put it."
- "What do you think smokers would do if they didn't smoke? You get pleasure from it, and you get some other beneficial things, such as relief. Maybe you'd beat your wife."
- "When CTR researchers found that cigarettes were bad and it was better not to smoke, we didn't publicize that."
- "We must attack the anti-smoking groups and zealots more confidently than we have in the past. If we can cool their zeal just a bit, not only might smoking as a subject become less of an issue, but also smokers might begin to feel less embattled..."
The Death — Some of Their Other Hits
- Mississippi's tobacco-related death toll is 4,700 deaths per year. In the United States, it's more than 400,000 deaths annually. And around the globe, about 5,000,000 (that's 5 million!) people die every year from tobacco-related illnesses.
- It's not just the smokers who suffer either. Approximately 50,000 people die from secondhand smoke related diseases each year.
- Every 6.5 seconds (about the time it takes you to blink twice) someone in the world dies from a smoking-related disease.
- Each year about 12,000 children are left without a mother and 31,000 are left without a father due to deaths caused by smoking.
The Disease — Guess It's a Good Way to Meet a Doctor
- Lung cancer: deadliest cancer. Almost 90% of lung cancer cases caused by smoking. Nice.
- Emphysema: reduces lung capacity making it difficult to breathe. Sweet.
- Heart disease: leading cause of death in the US. Smokers are 2-4 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease. Fantastic.
- Strokes: third leading cause of death in the US. Smokers 2.5 times more likely to suffer from stroke. Perfect.
